ROCK’S HOUSE

Bentonville, Arkansas

We worked with the owners of a very special 120-year old craftsman near the Bentonville square. The original owner, Aaron "Rock" Van Winkle, was a former slave who became a wealthy lumber mill manager after his emancipation. Our design concept carried through nearly every room in the house restored elements of the home's original character and added an eclectic, whimsical spin inspired by the best of British interiors and reflecting the maximalist heart of the owners.

A NEW BEGINNING

We collaborated with our clients to fully renovate most of the home in a way that celebrates the home's history and reflects our clients' maximalist, vintage-loving aesthetic. We used a mix of natural materials, classic Arts and Crafts-era wallpaper, and custom mosaic tile floors, along with restored family heirloom pieces in the client's own collection to create a whimsical and warm environment for the couple to raise their young family.

FARMHOUSE DREAMHOUSE

Our clients rightly wanted to preserve and amplify this history, while imbuing it with their own color-rich aesthetic. We wanted the home to feel like it was discovered unchanged from when it was built 100 years ago - like you had landed in the coolest, color drenched dream of a farmhouse.

A PATTERN STORY

One of the most special elements of the design was getting to collaborate with American Restoration Tile, an Arkansas-based company specializing in historically accurate mosaic tile. We designed a custom mosaic floor pattern for the primary bathroom and guest bathroom inspired by 1920s wedding quilt designs. The result is a bold floor linking back to the period the home was built, yet totally unique to the home and homeowners. We layered in unlacquered brass details, handmade subway tile, grass cloth, and a vintage clawfoot tub we found on Facebook Marketplace to set off the vintage vibe of both spaces, while letting the tile shine.

MAKING AN ENTRANCE

One of the first details we selected for the home was the gorgeous, yet not as widely used, “Honeysuckle” wallpaper designed by William Morris. The paper is so joyful and triggers childhood memories of summertime in Arkansas. We love how this smaller scale print greets the homeowners when they walk through the door. The classic pattern is offset by a more modern fabric on the custom entry bench.
